Performance
Work with ever-increasing amounts of data and more complex scenes. The new 64-bit version of Autodesk 3ds Max 9 takes advantage of the latest technology advancements, to address challenges you face in next-generation production pipelines.

Productivity
Quickly model inorganic shapes with Pro Booleans. Place animation into separate layers to easily tweak dense and complex animations. View scene complexity statistics along with the resulting frame rate to measure and optimize scene performance. Feature enhancements in 3ds Max 9such as faster solving of complex cloth dynamicsdeliver the speed and precision needed to meet time-sensitive production deadlines.

Pipeline Efficiencies
Easily share files, track work-in-progress assets, and customize production pipelines to accelerate creative workflows. Improvements to "XRefs" for better interaction with linked assets, support for relative paths, and Autodesk Vault functionality help production teams optimize workflow and manage collaboration among members of a creative team.

Rendering Enhancements
Produce stunning photo-real imagery. Use new mental ray 3.5 shaders to easily create beautiful skies with shadows from the sun or simulate metallic car paint. In addition, new presets for ambient occlusion, rounded corner effects, reflections, and refractions make it easier to achieve realistic, stunning results. Harness the full power of the mental ray rendering engine within Autodesk 3ds Max 9 software.

Quote:
Even with today's generation of fast raytracers, lighting a scene with GI is expensive in terms of render time. The irradiance mapping in V-Ray means we can be really indulgent with our render settings. Even if it takes 2 hours to render the first frame it's OK, because we're only calculating that once or twice for any given camera move. Once that's done we can render thousands of frames and it costs us very little. An added bonus is that since the lighting is coming from a fixed cache you don't have to worry about flickering. Naturally this doesn't apply to characters, where the lighting solution needs to change from frame to frame, so we have to split our renders into character/background passes. With GI this poses some challenges since you need the environment present in a render to bounce light onto a character. Chaos worked with us and others on this issue and managed to produce some pretty powerful matte/shadow controls. It makes layered rendering much easier.
Overall we're very pleased with V-Ray. Over the past 2 years we've had a very diverse range of projects: films, commercials, game FMVs and most recently a documentary. In almost every case V-Ray has allowed us to go beyond what the client asked for. Many times we'd get a new job in and we'd think: "Well it'd be great to use GI/glossy reflections/whatever to do this, but there's no way we can afford the render times, the schedule's too tight" Then we'd go and do some tests and nine times out of ten V-Ray would prove us wrong. These days we're not so skeptical and we go into most jobs assuming that we'll use V-Ray in some way.
