Wacky Word Problems: Games and Activities That Make Math Easy and Fun (Magical Math)

Author : by Lynette Long
Publisher: Jossey-Bass
Pages: 131
Format: PDF
ISBN 0471210617
Size: 5.24 MB
Language: English
Reading level: Ages 9-12

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6This volume includes specific directions and activities to construct pictographs, bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs, and to compile statistics. Materials needed, step-by-step directions, and at least one illustration accompany each activity. The black-and-white drawings and graphs are appealing and easy to read. While these activities are solid, the focus here is on play, not on thinking about when to use certain types of graphs or what the gathered information indicates. Similarly,
the computation of statistics is encouraged but there is little analysis of the results. This title can be a resource for teachers and parents of homeschoolers, but it needs a math-savvy facilitator to round out the learning.

Fox Prairie Elementary School, Stoughton, WI

Gr. 4-7. The superlatives in the title are hype, but students and teachers will find that this large-format paperback still offers quite a good introduction to graphs. The step-by-step presentation builds understanding from the ground up, beginning with pictographs and bar graphs and moving on to pie charts, line graphs, map charts, and statistics. For each activity, Long lists the materials needed, explains the steps taken, and includes at least one illustration. Many activities end with a "Brain Stretcher" challenging children to extend the game or activity in some way and occasionally encouraging critical or imaginativethinking. The black-and-white drawings of children are appealing, and the many graphs are clearly illustrated. A good choice for encouraging students to grapple with mathematical relationships, patterns of numbers, probability, and the visual representation of mathematical and statistical data.

Cinderella

by Ruth Sanderson "Once upon a time there was a gentleman who, after his beloved first wife died, married a widow with two daughters..."

It takes courage to proffer yet another version of Perrault's classic, but Sanderson, as gifted with the turn of a phrase as she is with the stroke of a brush, delivers an exceptionally exquisite rendering. Her luminous oils conjure up a gorgeous eighteenth-century backdrop, characters in elegant dress, and a richly appointed manor house where Cinderella slaves over her stepmother and stepsisters' demands. Just as Sanderson goes to great length to set the stage, so she paints personality and emotion into each of her characters. Children see a Cinderella who grieves for her deceased mother and a father who is caring and generous but ashamed of, and powerless to stop, his daughter's mistreatment. Among elements from the Brothers Grimm that Sanderson integrates into this telling is a white bird, whose songs soothe the sad girl as it flits among the leaves of a hazel tree, grown from a twig watered by Cinderella's tears. The luxuriously detailed costumes, the blooming gardens, and the characters' realistic features provide abundant visual interest to accompany the elegantly crafted text.

Elfabet An ABC of Elves

by Jane Yolen, Lauren A. Mills (Illustrator) "A is for Acorn Elf always acrobatic..."

Yolen's elves are all energetically engaged in a variety of activities: "G is for Grape Elf grumpily gathering," "K is for Kite Elf keenly kicking." Mills enters into the spirit of the book with watercolor drawings of dainty, pointy-eared, long-toed little folk busy in their flowered or fruited setting. Borders include upper- and lower-case letters and more flowers, birds, or animals that extend the initial letter theme, a device not uncommon among alphabet books. Although the text is unexceptional and the delicate artwork is somewhat precious, enough preschoolers and their care givers will enjoy the antics of the elves to warrant purchase where there is room for another alphabet book on the shelves.

So Many Bunnies Board Book A Bedtime ABC and Counting Book

by Rick Walton, Paige Miglio (Illustrator) "Old Mother Rabbit Lived in a shoe..."

Old Mother Rabbit lives in a shoe, but unlike her famous predecessor, she knows exactly what to do with her 26 offspring. After feeding them broth and carrots, she puts them all to bed in some rather strange places, leading readers through her house and garden as well as the alphabet: "1 was named Abel. He slept on the table. 2 was named Blair. She slept in a chair." The repetition of the exact same phrasing may get a little tiresome for adults reading aloud, but children will enjoy guessing where each rabbit sleeps. The napping places range from the fairly ordinary (chair, pillow) to the whimsical (trike, sink, trellis, bowl). The large, soft watercolor illustrations of cuddly bunnies, each with a distinct personality, will carry well in a group and are rich with clever details: carrot wallpaper, bunny dolls, and rabbit-shaped bedposts. The final two-page painting, in which all of the youngsters hop into bed with their mother, provides children with the opportunity to guess which bunny is which. Comforting and cozy, this attractive title is a good choice for pajama storytimes.

Nice or Nasty A Book of Opposites

by Nick Butterworth, Mick Inkpen

Kindergarten-Grade 2 The wry humor of this concept book of opposites makes it an appealing choice. Some pages may be slightly confusing (often both word choices are illustrated on the same page, and ``Quiet and loud,'' showing characters who look like Laurel and Hardy playing instruments, could also apply to the preceding page, ``Big and little''). However, children will delight in discovering the differences in the large, amusing watercolors on each page. The zany nice and nasty an elegant waiter holding one platter of hamburgers and one platter of snails, slugs, and wormswill surely tickle funny bones, and even those libraries not needing books on antonyms may consider purchasing this one for the humor shelves.
